A GM has the right to waive any player to free agency. To waive a player and drop him to free agency, you must post him in a new thread under the section titled "Releases". This will make permanent the decision to waive a player to free agency. Once posted, there is no turning back. A GM will still be responsible for half of that player’s salary for the duration of the contract.
*Note - the GM who previously waived said player and now wants to pick that player back up through FA, MUST initially bid an amount (and term, if applicable) equal to or greater than the amount and term at the time said player was dropped to FA. Any lesser bid by that GM will be invalid and immediately voided.
Dropping Prospects
If you drop a Protected Prospect, you are responsible for half their salary for the year you dropped them only. You have no more financial responsibility to that player the following year. Minor league players are free to drop.
To "waive" a player, please post their name to the league bulletin board under the section "Releases". Please indicate in the player name thread the amount of penalty you will be taking.
PP players can be waived in the off-season for no penalty as I view this as a non-tender, players must be non-tendered prior to the start of RFA bidding, or you will be subject to half the PP contract for the following season.
FREE AGENT BUYOUT CLAUSE
Each team has the ability to buyout the remaining contract of any player. The Buyout Clause allows for teams to eat the remaining salary on a one year hit. For example, Miguel Montero's contract pays him through 2018 - 16:$6m, 17:$5m, 18:$4m. Under the Buyout Clause you would take a one year hit of $7.5M - ($6M+$5M+$4M) x 50% - and be free of penalties for 2017-18. This allows for teams to get out from under bad contracts sooner.
